Basketball & Football Coach Received Extensions

First confirmed by Chuck Landon of the Huntington Herald Dispatch, Marshall’s football and men’s basketball coach received contract extensions within the last 15 months.

Doc Holliday was awarded an extension after defeating FIU in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl on Dec. 21, 2001 and leading the Herd to a 7-6 season. In three years as Marshall’s football coach, Holliday has accumulated a record of 17-20. Holliday has three years left on his contact.

Athletic Director Mike Hamrick handed a contract extension to basketball coach Tom Herrion after last season’s NIT loss to Middle Tennessee State. The NIT appearance was the Thundering Herd’s first since 1988. In almost three years at the helm of Marshall’s basketball program Herrion has a overall record of 55-42. Like Holliday, Herrion has three years remaining on his contract.

Does Big East TV Deal Signal Tulsa’s Exit from C-USA?

First confirmed by Brett McMurphy of ESPN, the Big East and ESPN have reached a new media rights deal, paying the conference $130 million over seven years. With the agreement, individual league members can expect an annual payout of $1.8 million.

Earlier this month it was reported that the Big East was likely to add a 12th member for 2014 after it reached a new broadcast agreement, with Tulsa as the likely target. Armed with a new media rights deal, is the Big East preparing to poach another member of C-USA?

That depends on how much Tulsa values the Big East. In terms of dollars, C-USA’s television contract with CBS Sports and Fox Sports net’s each member between $1.2 million and $1.5 million per year depending on which report you read. Either way, that is not a big difference between what the Big East can offer.

Another factor Tulsa must consider is C-USA’s exit fee which stands at $7 million and the Big East entrance fee, believed to be around $2.5 million. Can the Golden Hurricanes justify spending almost $10 million to join a league that is only distributing $1.8 million per school for its media package?

As alluded to by Tulsa President Stedman Upham, his school’s biggest desire to leave C-USA might not be driven by money. In a January interview with the Tulsa World, Upham expressed his concern about being only one of two private institutions remaining in C-USA past 2014.

"I also want to be in a conference that we can be proud of academically”. Upham told the paper. “Losing two of the private schools (SMU and Tulane) in Conference USA is damaging to me, in the way I think about the conference”.

If Tulsa exits C-USA it will not take the league long to find a new member. As reported by Dieter Kurtenback of the Florida Sun Sentinel last year, C-USA has standing agreements with Western Kentucky and New Mexico State for those schools to join the conference at a later date if slots become available.

Either way, Tulsa’s decision to join the Big East or stay in C-USA will be an interesting case study in how both leagues are valued.

First reported by Derek Redd of the Charleston Daily Mail, Marshall University wide receiver Aaron Dobson did not participate in running drills at today's NFL Combine. Earlier in the week Dobson told HerdZone.com that a pulled hamstring would keep him from working out.  Despite not participating in drills the Mountain State native still had a chance to conduct interviews with various NFL front offices.

Dobson will have an opportunity to run for scouts at Marshall's pro-day on March 13th.

C-USA Basketball: Can Marshall Secure a First Round Bye?

After registering its first road win of the season at UCF on Wednesday, Marshall sits one game behind ECU, Tulsa, and Tulane for fifth place and Conference USA’s final bye in next month’s league tournament. As the Thundering Herd learned last year, receiving a bye is crucial. Playing their fourth game in four days Marshall could not contend with a well rested Memphis squad, falling 83-57 in the championship.

Here is a look at C-USA’s current standings, just league records reflected.

Standings
1) Memphis: 12-0
2) Southern Miss: 10-2
3) *UCF: 7-5
4) UTEP: 7-5
5) ECU: 6-6
6) Tulsa: 6-6
7) Tulane: 5-6
8) Marshall: 5-7
9) UAB: 4-7
10) Houston: 4-8
11) SMU: 3-8
12) Rice: 1-10
*Ineligible for postseason play

Six teams (as indicated UCF is ineligible for postseason play) sit within two games of each other for what will ultimately be the third and fourth seed in the conference tournament. After scanning over the remaining schedules for UTEP, ECU, Tulsa, Tulane, Marshall, and UAB this is how I predict they will finish.

UTEP
2/27 Houston: W
3/2 @ Rice: W
3/5 Memphis: L
3/9 @ SMU: W
Final C-USA Record: 10-6

ECU
2/23 @ SMU: W
3/2 @ Southern Miss: L
3/6 Tulane: W
3/9 Marshall: L
Final C-USA Record: 8-8

Tulsa
2/23 @ UCF: L
3/2 Tulane: W
3/6 SMU: W
3/9 @ Rice: W
Final C-USA Record: 8-8

Tulane
2/27 UAB: W
3/2 @ Tulsa: L
3/6 @ ECU: L
3/9 Houston: W
Final C-USA Record: 7-9

Marshall
2/23 UAB: W
3/2 @ Houston: L
3/5 Southern Miss: L
3/9 @ ECU: W
Final C-USA Record: 7-9

UAB
2/23 @ Marshall: L
2/27 @ Tulane: L
3/2 SMU: W
3/6 UCF: W
3/9 @ Memphis: L
Final C-USA Record: 6-10

If the scenario above plays out UTEP takes the third seed while ECU (head to head tiebreaker over Tulsa) earns the final tournament bye. Even though they finish with identical records Tulane is placed above Marshall because they own a head to head win over the Herd.

The good news for Marshall is that they virtually control their own fate. If the Herd wins out it is hard to imagine a scenario where they don’t finish in the top five.
